Peppol and e-invoicing: what Belgian businesses need to know in 2026
Since 1 January 2026, a normal PDF invoice is no longer sufficient for most Belgian B2B transactions. Structured electronic invoicing is now the standard.
What changed on 1 January 2026?
For transactions between Belgian businesses subject to VAT, structured electronic invoices have in principle been mandatory since 1 January 2026.
A normal PDF invoice sent by email is therefore no longer sufficient as the legally required invoice for transactions that fall within the scope of the B2B obligation.
Small businesses are included too
The Belgian authorities have clarified that the requirement also applies to businesses using the small-business VAT exemption scheme. Businesses that only invoice private consumers are not subject to the same B2B rule for those outgoing B2C invoices, but they still need to be able to receive structured supplier invoices where applicable.
Why does this matter in a website project?
A website does not automatically need a Peppol integration when invoicing is handled in separate accounting software. However, when a website automates orders, bookings or business sales processes, the invoicing flow should still connect correctly to the company’s administrative workflow.
At Jolly Worx, we therefore keep a clear distinction between:
- website functionality such as enquiries, orders or bookings;
- payments;
- and the official accounting and invoicing flow.
This prevents a polished online journey from later conflicting with the client’s administrative obligations.
